Working & Not Working

Written on the way home from work in central Dublin and musing on the last few years of a man's working life...

Working & Not Working

As he looks back

At his working life

Not much to cheer...

Not much of a career

Have another beer

But he mustn't stutter

He's not in the gutter

Not stuck in some doorway

Injectin' his life away

He's not gonna succumb to dejection

Despite the rejection

No Ketamine bladder last time he checked

Although he'd have liked to climb the ladder

Reach higher levels

Like an O'Leary or a Musk

To name just two

Sometimes it's better

To be on the ground

With those who are sound

So there may be rain today

But tomorrow brings hope

He just needs to avoid too much dope

No need to elope

To faraway lands

Instead these hands will keep working

For another ten years at least

Not a decade of the rosary

In his choice of hosiery

This boy's an optimist

Maybe not a Pharmacist

He'll keep on goin'

Until the bus arrives and the destination is met

Wherever that is yet

This is a story

Perhaps not of glory

A man who Never really had a CV

Despite sitting on a mound of CD's

As he makes his way back to his bed-sit

(Hey, aren't they illegal?)

Like stealing the eggs from a rare bald eagle

No, much better to stroke a Beagle

One man and his dog

Will help him through the fog

Of a life

Maybe little strife

But the possiblities are rife

You just need to stay in touch bud

We have your back man

Until you get lumbago or sciatica

At any rate
